Reiteration
a study on the emptiness of negative spaces and coping with trauma through repetitive, neurotic acts

My current work revolves around deepening my understanding of the human mind, by first deepening my own self-knowledge. Although the specifics of each human experience are diverse and individual, there is so much about the general human experience that we all share – experiences of love, friendship, jealousy, loss, and so many others. This work is an attempt to delve into and map aspects of my own psyche in relation to childhood trauma.

My research addresses the way that materiality and process can be used to explore the permeating effects of childhood trauma throughout one’s life. In my focus on sculpture, the contact I have with my media has become a metaphor for the exploration of my own psyche. The act of creating work inspired by the experience of trauma turns that experience into a physical object. This makes the experience easier to comprehend, and hack away at. Even in my two-dimensional work, I focus on creating a piece that both invades the viewer’s physical space and invites them into a different psychological space.
